What’s in a name? A Natural Response: From Transparent Butterflies to Least Skipperlings

TRANSPARENT BUTTERFLY: All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed: often in life that which is unnoticed has the most power.

Transparency–what does it allow us to see?

See-through.

Clear–as in clarity–or as in Clear as mud?

transp butterflyWhy do we talk the way we do? Ever wondered that? And where do words come from? Space?

Greta oto is one of a number of similar transparent winged butterflies. It comes from central America, and is found from Mexico to Panama. It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which are a natural camouflage mechanism.

Family: Nymphalidae
Genus: Ithomiinae
Latin name: Greta oto
Common name: The Glasswing

Augh-ough. I’m hooked. Glasswing Butterfly is a brush-footed butterfly. The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass.

This creature sounds like a dancer… maybe a sylph. Brush-footed. What on earth is that? It brushes as it walks? (dancers do this when they do something called battement tendu jete)

Or is it that it’s foot looks like a brush?

It’s positively eerie. I’m getting like… Cinderella’s slipper. It was glass.

But there’s more… lore… It’s a member of the clearwing clade. Is that a club?

Oh. It’s fantasy. Gotta be. No? The clearwing clade is real? Are you a member? Gee. Tell me about it. I might want to join.

The butterfly’s Spanish name is “espejitos”, which means “little mirrors.”

Wait, I remember another cool name… The Least Skipperling

It’s a bug, an insect, an arthropod. Or is it? And what’s least about it? I personally would love to be called a Skipperling. I like skipping and skippers. Is the ling from dingaling? What is a “ling” or is it all one–skipperling. A lingskipper? Ohhh. A ling skipper. It jumps from cloud to cloud. I can see it now.

Oh. Now some of the scientists and naturalists are angry at me. I led them on. They thought they’d come here and discover some new fact. However, I’m not scientist or naturalist, I’m a writer, so I can’t tell you “the facts” unless I do more research or someone latches onto this site who knows and leaves a comment.

I just love the names. It elicits in me some wonder. What is its story? The Glasswing. The Transparent Butterfly. The Least Skipperling. What does it have to tell us about itself, and therefore about life? In facts or not.

Is Least Skipperling the name of a girl born in Australia? Is this a boy from a Native American tribe? Perhaps, this character–if I choose to bring it to life–will be a dog owned by a fairy who lives at sea world. I don’t know yet. Perhaps someone–you–will tell me your version.

Maybe you’ll write about it, or tell its story in pictures, drawn, finger-painted, danced, or taken by camera.

Or maybe, it’s a poem. I think its name is one.betty boop NYC

Whatever it is

To me it’s magic.

UNUSUAL ORGANIZATIONS 4 Your Education, Inspiration & Inner Freedom

All about sculpture

All about sculpture

We’ve shared some unusual jobs and unusual people.

Today, we’re looking at some unusual organizations selected for their positive missions.

This one I’d like to be part of: KEYS TO THE RAY 4 YOUR DAY

For organizations, companies, individuals and groups, missions or mission statements can be powerful. They are a kind of prayer for something important to come in. They are intentions for ways of being in our world. When buzz words are shared by more than one individual, this makes them empowered (or stronger than they are alone).

To find out more about each group or company, you may need to click on the words, “click here” or on a picture. It’s kind of a game. See what you discover as you go about your day. Are you game? Notice what “games” people play.

The first organization is absolutely incredible in the way it helps and supports artists, performers, and others who use the arts. The art in us can be under-developed, missed, and misunderstood, and those who work in the arts for their jobs or livelihood can be underfunded, often working long hours without any source of income, payment or job security. Click here to learn more about it, and begin your adventure in supercalifragilisticexpialidocious group awareness!

Click here to continue your adventure and discover how a circle can be more than its rings. It’s located in the metropolitan Toledo, Ohio-area, just in case you lack faith that heaven is here on earth now.

and for an ocean, sky, air, earth – or a boatload – of possibilities that might be exactly what you need: click here now.

The organization represented by the words below has an unusual name. Click on the word, DANCE, in the dark square below. See where it takes you, and see if you can figure out what the company’s name means without reading, by looking and listening only. This incredible company holds the dream of the POFFF and POFFF Master within it. Enjoy, and please, accept this invitation to the…

Happy Fairy Faerie Fae Day!

I just learned about this one. Is she someone to fear? Certainly, this is a different way to look at something or someone, like a Banshee.

Is she what we mean today by calling someone a cry baby?

Beansidhe (Banshee, Ban shee, Badhbh, Badhbh Chaointe):
A Celtic or Celtic Irish fairy whose name actually means, Woman of the Hill. Her name comes from “bean,” or woman, and Sidhe, or fairy.

Apparently, she looks like an old woman with deep-set eyes, which are bright red from constant weeping. She wears a cloak over a green dress. But I suppose she could wear anything she wants, couldn’t she?

Another description places her with wild long red hair, wearing a white gown or dress. Another, still, describes her as a beautiful veiled woman, with a way of moving or being that conveys great sadness. She seems to be a servant of some kind, and her sorrowful wail is heard the night before a family member is going to die.

Sometimes she takes on the form of a crow and beats her wings against a window as she lets out her mournful cry.

Many claim to have seen her as she goes wailing about. The Irish funeral cry is said to be an imitation of this cry. And when more than one of these creatures wail together, it is said to be for the death of some holy or great one.

Unseen, these crying spirits attend the funerals of the beloved dead, and sometimes can be heard wailing along with the mournful cries of others, each beansidhe attending her own mortal family.

The Scottish version of the Banshee is the Bean Nighe.

What unusual faerie types do you know about? Are there banshees in Harry Potter? Do any have first names?

Fairies seem to want to help us. They offer a look at emotions or circumstances in life. Most are tied to nature in some way, and many are nature’s angels.

Today, many people feel that fairies are here to help us lighten up, have fun, be playful, and look at ourselves and our lives differently. Sometimes, we need to wail like a banshee, but after a time, just like sun appearing after rain, it’s time to come out and sing, dance, and play again.

May you feel the fairies around you and see their little lights and note their fluttering wings in your life often.

The Power of Team – “Rafts”

Fairy penguin saved from predators The flightless fairy penguin of Australia

Clumsy on land, a fairy penguin can’t survive for long. Not with the introduced fox as its natural enemy. But look what they do! After each day in the water, they gather where the surf meets the shore until each penguin has joined them. Then they march up the beach to their burrows together. They support each other and rely on each other. Each one is an important part of the whole. And because they know this – instinctively – everyone of these penguins wins.
